Exercise 1 | Properties of Gases

General Chemistry 2 - Exercise 1

A gas occupies a volume of 95.0 dm3 at a pressure of 5.00 kPa.

What will the volume of the gas (in L) be at a pressure of 632 Pa and at the same temperature?

Situation 1: V1 = 95.0 dm3 and P1 = 5.00 kPa = 5.00 x 103 Pa

Situation 2: P2 = 632 Pa

Boyle’s Law:

At constant temperature, P and V are inversely proportional:

P1 V1 = P2 V2

⇒ V2 = P1 V1P2

⇒ V2 = 5.00 × 103 × 95.0632

V= 7.52 x 102 dm3 = 7.52 x 102 L
