Exercise 3 | Solubility and Precipitation Reactions
General Chemistry 3 - Exercise 3
The solubility of TlCl (s) in water is 3.3 g.L-1.
Calculate the value of Ksp for TlCl (s).
s (solubility of TlCl (s) in M) = S (solubility in g.L-1) / MTlCl
⇒ s = 1.4 x 10-2 M
Chemical equation:
TlCl (s) Tl+ (aq) + Cl- (aq)
Pure water: the only source of Tl+ and Cl- is TlCl
From the reaction stoichiometry: [Tl+] = [Cl-]
s = [Tl+] = [Cl-]
Ksp = [Tl+][Cl-]
Ksp = s2
⇒ Ksp = 1.9 x 10-4 M 2
