Exercise 2 | The Chemistry of the Transition Metals

General Chemistry 3 - Exercise 2

Give the oxidation state of the metal in:

[CuCl4]2-,  [Co(NH3)3(CO)3]3+,  [Cd(CN)4]2-  and  [Mo(CO)4Cl2]+

[CuCl4]2-

Oxidation state of Cu = charge – 4 x oxidation state of Cl- = -2 + 4 = + 2

[Co(NH3)3(CO)3]3+

Oxidation state of Co = charge – 3 x oxid. state of NH3 – 3 oxid. state of CO = 3 – 0 – 0 = + 3

[Cd(CN)4]2-

Oxidation state of Cd = charge – 4 x oxid. state of CN- = - 2 + 4 = + 2

[Mo(CO)4Cl2]+

Oxidation state of Mo = charge – 4 x oxid. state of CO – 2 x oxid. state of Cl- = + 1 – 0 + 2 = + 3
