Exercise 2 | Properties of Gases

General Chemistry 2 - Exercise 2

A balloon with helium (g) has volume of 1.40 L at T = 25.0°C.

Assuming constant pressure, what volume will the balloon occupy, if it is placed in the freezer and cooled to -22.0°C?

Situation 1: V1 = 1.40 L and T1 = 25.0°C = 298 K

Situation 2: T2 = -22.0°C = 251 K

Charles’s Law:

At constant pressure, V and T are directly proportional:

V1 / T1 = V2 / T2 ⇒ V2 = V1 × T2T1

V2 = 1.40 × 251298 = 1.18 L
